Hound Collars
Martingale or hound collars have been designed for dogs with large necks and small heads. Martingale collars were first used by owners of hunting dogs such as whippets and greyhounds, whose necks are larger than their heads. Martingale collars are sometimes called “greyhound collars” because they are designed for dogs whose head is narrower than the neck. They are most often seen on sighted greyhounds due to their unique streamlined head shape, which makes it easier for them to get out of the standard collar.
The Martingale collar is not a training collar; it is a protective measure to prevent the dog from slipping out of the collar. Although the martingale collar is not as commonly used as the “regular” flat buckle collar that most of us wear on dogs, it can be a useful tool for escape masters, or it can provide extra support for your whippet or greyhound when on a lead.
Use rope or tape measure to make sure your collar fits your dog. You will find that if you can insert one finger between your dog’s skin and collar (for small dogs), or if you can insert two fingers between your dog’s skin and collar (for large dogs).
We have a range of Hound collars from Dogs & Horses, they come in 7 different colours and 8 sizes, so there is something for all breeds and sizes.
We are of course more than happy to help should you have any questions regarding hound collars.
